The San Marzano tomato has recently been called "The most important industrial tomato of the 20th century".
San Marzano tomatoes originate from San Marzano sul Sarno, Near Naples in Italy. The Tomatoes were first grown in volcanic soil in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. One story goes that the first seed of this tomato came to Campania in 1770, as a gift from the Viceroyalty of Peru to the Kingdom of Naples, and that it was planted in the area of San Marzano.
These tomatoes are the Royles Royce of tomatoes! They have more flesh, fewer seeds, less acidity, more sweetness and more minerals than any other tomatoes. Full of tomatoey goodness that everyone loves.
We have decided from the very start to use only San Marzano D.O.P. in all our diy pizza kits. The flavour is unparalleled.
We buy Strianese tinned San Marzano and use a hand blender to break them down. Then we season lightly and package into our pizza kits.
